The General Survivors Act (Anw) provides a financial benefit to survivors of a deceased partner. This support compensates for income loss after death. Note: not everyone qualifies, as the conditions are strict.

When is there entitlement to Anw?

You qualify for Anw if:

  • You care for a child younger than 18 years, or
  • You are at least 45% disabled

If you do not meet one of these criteria, you will not receive an Anw benefit.

Income and influence on Anw

Your own income is partially offset:

  • 50% of income above the exemption threshold is deducted
  • Income from work, benefits or pensions counts
  • Wealth has no influence

Can I get Anw when cohabiting without marriage?

Yes, provided you had a notarial cohabitation agreement or a joint child. Otherwise, this is usually not possible.

What if I start cohabiting with a new partner?

Yes, the Anw benefit stops immediately upon cohabiting with someone else.

Am I entitled to Anw upon the death of an ex-partner?

No, normally not, unless you received alimony from the deceased.

How do I apply for an Anw benefit?

You can submit an application via the Social Insurance Bank (SVB) in Utrecht, online with DigiD via Mijn SVB or by telephone. Ensure you have documents such as a death certificate. The SVB checks if you meet the requirements. Submit your application quickly, as retroactive effect is not possible.

Can I receive Anw without children or disability?

In 2024, the exemption threshold is around €1.450 gross per month. Above this amount, 50% of the additional income is deducted from your benefit.

What if my child turns 18?
