Frequently Asked Questions about Holiday Pay
How do I determine my holiday pay?
Your holiday pay is at least 8% of your gross annual income, including salary, bonuses and allowances. Multiply your gross annual salary by 0.08 for the base amount. Check your CAO or contract for possibly higher percentages. Your payslip often shows the accrued amount.
When will I receive my holiday pay?
The payment usually takes place in May or June, for the period from June of the previous year to May of this year. This may vary per employer. Consult your contract or CAO for specific dates. In case of dismissal, you will receive the remaining holiday pay as part of the final settlement.
Can my employer pay less than 8%?
No, 8% is the statutory minimum and may not be lower, except in statutory exceptions. Many CAOs apply higher percentages, such as 8.5% or 9%. Check your payslip and contract if in doubt. Report violations to the Netherlands Labour Authority (Inspectie SZW).
Is holiday pay based on gross or net salary?
It is calculated on your gross annual salary, including allowances and extras. Net salary is not relevant. You therefore receive at least 8% of your total gross income, but after tax the net amount is lower.
What if I am sick or receiving unemployment benefits (WW)?
In case of illness, you accrue holiday pay on your received salary. During WW, you do not receive holiday pay, as this is not salary. If you work part-time alongside WW, you do accrue holiday pay on that salary. Your rights remain intact in case of illness.
